My 64-bit servers run all my 32 bit apps just fine. You are aware, I take it, that Vista will be the last ever 32-bit Windows release? Presumably you are also aware that 64-bit IA servers will be running 32- bit apps at sub-32-bit speeds. Even x86-64 based servers will be running 32-bit apps a little slower

Using an 8-bit bus. However, a 386 could not interpret at 32-bit value as a linear address; it used segemented addressing. Take a look at the Itanium, the 64-bit kludge from Intel. A 64 bit architecture can 1) handle flat 64 bit virtual addresses and 2) manipulate 64 bit integers and bit fields as easily as 32 bit quantities. Not everyone needs 1) but 2) can be quite useful all the way down to a $150 Nintendo 64. HPC indeed! OK, I'll bite. Don't MMX, 3DNow! and KNI SIMD manipulate 64- and

One is *whether* alpha time_t should be 64-bit, and the second is *when* it should go to 64-bit. I think all the new platforms (sparc64 and ia-64, at least) should be 64-bit time_t's for 5.0-release. For alpha users, it might be less painful if alpha remained 32-bit for 5.0-release, and then consider making time_t

What makes an AMD chip 64 bit?
“We’re extremely excited about the upcoming AMD Athlon 64 processor. It’s designed to run today’s 32-bit games and applications and will actually, clock-for-clock, boost their performance relative to 32-bit AMD Athlon processors. But when you add 64-bits to the picture you can get additional capabilities and other

The other advantage comes in the rare applications that make heavy use of 64-bit integer types. 64-bit integers are possible on 32-bit CPUs, but you take at least a 3 fold performance hit and much more for the less common instructions. Cryptography is the only application I know of that often makes heavy use of

was the first to bring 64 bit workstations into the realm of the PC. Apple beat Wintel to market with 64 bit personal computers, the speed and spec debates notwithstanding. That's fun, given how much you've claimed that Wintel beat Apple to the 64 bit market for a very long time. "They went 32-bit sooner than

Anyone got a 64 bit system running how is it ?
The 32 bit versions could be stubbed to the 64's in the stub code, right there, which would make the system calls DTRT on both platforms. The other downside appears to be that the only I think the issue comes down to running 32 bit code on 64 bit platforms, particularly, Intel code, and having it "just work".

You'll likely need to make it a dual-boot rig (the 32 and 64 bit installations on different disks) or get two of them though. Thanks for your clarification. Is there a way to force the install of the full 64 bit OS so that the 64 bit applications will run? FAQ. I also suspect that so-called "64-bit" version of Oracle is really 32-bit version with 64-bit memory management. Untrue. Code is code.. is code. Don't confuse that with what the compiler does. I would be very surprise if Oracle uses 32bit calls and thunked that via a kernel layer to 64bit.

32 versus 64-bit mode
It would also need a 64-bit memory manager. Returning a 32-bit pointer to a 64-bit application is just silly. For those reasons alone, I believe that AIX 4.3 with 64-bit support is The effort involved making the 32-bit kernel be 64-bit friendly would be better spent on using and improving the 64-bit kernel.

I don't remember having said or suggested that running 32 bit apps under 32-bit-compatibility mode would degrade performance. We're talking here about the performance differences between 32-bit and 64-bit apps, not between running a 32-bit app in native 32-bit vs. 32-bit-compatibility mode.
