64 Bit Windows And Athlon 64 On The Way
Well, a 64 bit data bus means that instruction bits can be fetched twice as fast. Two 32 bit instructions could be fetched in one cycle, for example. On a 64-bit system, the limit is lifted to billions of billions of bytes. Doubling the register size from 32 to 64 bit, is basically a consequence of that

The 386 introduced a new 32 bit mode, where all of the normal data and addressing registers are doubled in size to 32 bits. Full arithmetic and logical operations can be carried out on 32 bit words, and there is a little bit of usage of 64 bit words. Because the addressing registers can also hold 32 values,

There are several reasons that 64-bit processes cannot load 32-bit DLLs and 32-bit processes cannot load 64-bit DLLs. 1.. The thunk layer would have to copy all parameters and data they point to into the low 2G of the 64-bit application, because the 32-bit DLL cannot address memory above 2G.
